March sees the beginning of spring across most of the northern hemisphere, with other parts of the world continuing to see good weather. It’s a great month to book a getaway; reward yourself for getting through the British winter and celebrate the start of a new season by travelling to a new destination! Here are some of the best places to visit in March.
Ireland is a beautiful country no matter where you go, but in March, the only place to go is Dublin. Ahead of St Patrick’s Day celebrations, Dublin transforms into a party capital. You’ll find a parade and a full schedule of events over the weekend of 17thMarch, giving you the perfect opportunity to soak up a different culture and have a laugh.
Away from the festivities, Dublin is home to a multitude of attractions including galleries, museums, bars and even a castle. Perfect for a weekend away, travelling to Dublin is an easy way to immerse yourself in a new place without breaking the bank.
Valencia is known for a variety of things; architecture, food and museums are but a few. A great alternative to Barcelona, it is Spain’s third-largest city. In March, the city celebrates Las Fallas de San José; the Festival of Fire. Happening in mid-March, Valencia becomes full of fireworks, bonfires and music, featuring huge papier mâché and wood sculptures that are eventually burnt.
Visiting in March means you’ll evade the crowds of summer, making visiting the many attractions much more bearable. Wander around markets, museums, parks or simply enjoy paella and sangria sat in one of the many plazas.
The Canary Islands are renowned for their good weather and short flight time from the UK, making it a popular choice for winter sun. March sees the beginning of spring, with around 11 hours of sunshine a day and temperatures hitting the mid-20s. If you’re looking to relax on a beach and forget about your daily routine, this may be the perfect choice.
Tenerife is home to an active volcano surrounded by the Teide National Park, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The island is also home to some great hiking paths and a famous water park for the more adventurous.
While some associate Tenerife with the typical Brit abroad, you’d be surprised; La Laguna, the former capital, has beautifully preserved the Tenerife of decades past while the old town of Puerto de la Cruz is peaceful and cultural.
Sri Lanka has been growing in popularity as a destination for many different reasons; the destination’s history, culture and natural beauty are all attracting visitors from across the world. Full of ancient sites, rainforests and stunning beaches, March in Sri Lanka is still high season, making it a perfect time to visit. The month of March sees the Hindu festival of Maha Sivarathri take place; commemorating the marriage of the God Shiva to Parvati.
Sri Lanka is home to multiple World Heritage Sties; from Sigiriya, ancient city ruins, to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Some parts of the country have ruins dating back more than 2000 years.
Jordan may not be a conventional holiday destination, but it is home to friendly towns, incredible monuments and desert landscapes. A truly spectacular place, visit the capital Petra is an ancient city in its own right, while Jerash is home to Jordan’s largest Roman site. On the other hand, Wadi Rum is one of the easiest and safest glimpses of the desert.
High season begins in March, with perfect weather offering the chance to hike freely and view the natural beauty of the area. Temperatures hang around 16-18 degrees making it pleasant and enjoyable.
